Standard and Criteria for
Special Purpose Schools.
Definition of Schools Qualifying Under the Special Purpose Criteria
Comprehensive Schools
A Comprehensive Special Purpose School is one that offers students an alternative
to the traditional elementary or secondary school. The school must offer a comprehensive
educational program for the students it serves. A school designed to meet the
educational needs of a particular group of students, under special circumstances,
may also be considered a Comprehensive Special Purpose School (i.e., school
for the hearing impaired, school for the visually impaired, special education
program, etc.)
Supplementary Schools (Partial Program)
A supplementary Special Purpose School is an educational entity that offers
a partial program of instruction in a specific area of learning (i.e., tutorial
programs, environmental education, specialized language instruction) that includes
evaluation, support and instruction. Student attendance in a supplementary school
is limited to the time required for participation in the specific area(s) of
learning for which the student is enrolled. Typically students who enroll in
supplementary schools have had, are having, or look forward to having full-time
participation in a comprehensive school or college.
